Hurricane and Flood Planning

Hurricanes, and the resulting flooding, cause large scale damage. If your home is in a coastal area, you should be prepared, if a hurricane would strike.  If you live in a high risk area, you should make sure that you are ready for the insurance process in the result of a hurricane or flooding that accompanies a hurricane. Being organized ahead of time not only will make the recovery process much less stressful, it also should help to complete your filing much more quickly.

Be Prepared:

In order to fully ensure that your home, property, and belongings can be replaced in the event of a disaster, you need to make sure that you have documentation regarding everything that you own. Part of the hurricane and flood planning process should involve putting together a home inventory.  This way you have proof of the contents of your home to present to your insurance company after a disaster.

  • Written Home Inventory:  Create a written inventory of all belongings - including purchase date and price.
  • Video Home Inventory: Videotape or photograph all of the rooms of your home and your belongings.
  • Appraisal: Get a professional appraisal of antiques, jewelry and other items of value.  Make sure to include close-up photos of these items with your home inventory.
  • Inventory Storage: Keep a copy of your home inventory and appraisals in a safe location such as a bank safety deposit box.
