Hurricane Names

The choosing of hurricane names is pretty fascinating. In the past, names of women were used to identify hurricanes. This practice stopped after World War II, and both male and female names started being used.

Today, we have six lists that continue to rotate. The lists only change when there is a hurricane that is so devastating that the name is retired and another name replaces it. For example, Katrina was replaced by Katia, Floyd was replaced by Franklin, and Hugo was replaced by Humberto.

The names chosen for 2009 hurricane season are: Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, Erika, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida, Joaquin, Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nicholas, Odette, Peter, Rose, Sam, Teresa, Victor and Wanda.
